My mother just murmurs a half-asleep greeting. I pull the curtain around my bed, turn on the little lamp, and take out the dress—the only thing that could possibly take my attention from the memory of Kai’s body pressed against me. I spread it out on the mattress as carefully as if it were a spiderweb. I expected that I’d want to try it on right away, but I actually don’t want to quite yet, in case it doesn’t fit or doesn’t look good. Right now, I want to imagine that it’s perfect. I want to picture myself wearing it and looking like it was made for me. Hell, even if it wasn’t made for me, I’ll figure out a way to make it look like it was.

This dress is mine. How is this possible?

An issue, though, is where to keep it. All my clothes except underwear and nightclothes are hanging neatly on a rack that’s clearly visible when my curtain is open. I don’t have a closet. And this color and fabric—my mother will notice it hanging there, I’m sure. She’d never believe I got it at the thrift store. If it were sold used, it would go for at least a couple hundred dollars. I can’t explain to her that I was at Tania Bawa’s house. She still has no idea I’ve gotten friendly with Annika’s son.

I fold it up neatly and put it in my plastic drawer with my underwear, even though that feels like sacrilege and I hate to think of it wrinkling. Just a temporary solution.

Then I get in bed and try, unsuccessfully, not to think about Kai.
